As a senz° umbrella behaves completely differently from a traditional round umbrella, it will take a bit of getting used-to that first time in heavy weather. But the most important thing to remember is that the senz° is to be held loosely in one hand, as it will automatically find the best position to battle the wind. Allow it to move around as it needs space to find the most comfortable position.
Initially, one may want to grab the senz° tightly with two hands and hold it against the wind. This is not necessary and is in fact counter-productive. Fixing the umbrella works against allowing the basic principle of aerodynamics to do its thing and as a result, damage may occur.
senz° was the brainchild of young Dutch industrial design and engineering student Gerwin Hoogendoorn. Having made the initial drawings and produced a prototype on his grandmother’s sewing machine, Hoogendoorn approached fellow students at Netherlands’ Delft University of Technology, Gerard Kool and Philip Hess, to brainstorm how to bring it to market. Within nine days of the umbrella’s launch in 2006, they had sold all 10,000 of their initial production run.
